Solutions Flashcards
What is a solute?
A solute is a substance that dissolves
{In salt solution, water is the solvent and salt is the solute}
What is a solvent?
A solvent is a liquid that substance can dissolve in.
{In salt solution water is the solvent and salt is the solute}
How can you separate Rock Salt, a mixture of salt and sand?
Grind up two spatulas of rock-salt using a pastel and mortar
{to get the rock-salt into smaller pieces}
Place the crushed rock-salt in a beaker and add water
{the salt will dissolve in the water, the sand will not dissolve}
Filter the solution using some filter paper, a funnel and a conical flask
{the salt would have dissolves into the water, meaning when the water passes through it is also brining through the salt. However sand doesn’t dissolve, meaning the sand will be left separate from the water}
What is the process of distillation?
Distillation is the process of separating a liquid from another substance by evaporating the liquid, turning it into vapour, and run cooling it down, turning it back into a liquid through condensation.
What is solubility?
Solubility is the amount of things that a liquid can hold through dissolving. When the liquid reaches its solubility it means it no more can be dissolved into it.
How can we increase solubility?
We can increase solubility by increasing the heat of the liquid.
What is a solute?
The solid in the solution.
What is a solvent?
The liquid in the solution.
What is a solution?
A mixture of a solute and a solvent.
What does it mean for something to be saturated?
Can’t dissolve anymore
What is a solution?
A solution is a mixture of a solute dissolved in a solvent
