Acids And Alkalis Flashcards
What is a neutralisation reaction?
When an acid or alkali substance is turned neutral.
What chemical equation is used to show he making of salt?
Base + Acid = Salt + Water
B + A = S + H2O
BASHO
What is BASHO?
Base (alkali) + Acid = Salt + H2O (water)
It is a neutralisation reaction
What happens when you mix an acid and an alkali?
Depending on how balanced the strength of the acid and alkali is, if they are roughly the same strength they should neutralise each other.
What two things can you use to measure the PH of a liquid?
Universal indicator {doesn’t work with anything but liquid}
Litmus Paper {works with things other than liquid}
What are Antacids?
Antacids are pills or powers that people eat to reduce stomach acid. They contain alkali to neutralise the acid.
On a PH scale, what colour is an acid?
Red, orange and yellow
On a PH scale, what colour is an Alkali?
Blue, pink, purple
On a PH scale, what colour is Neutral?
Green
