Fuels, Calories and Energy Flashcards
How can we measure calories?
We can measure calories using a device called a calorimeter.
What are fossil fuels and how are they made?
Dead organisms, plants and animals get buried over time, sedimentary rock slowly builds up over these fossils. Without oxygen the fossils very slowly turn into coal and oil.
If a food is low in calories is it a high energy food or a low energy food?
A low energy food. The higher the calories, the higher the energy the food contains.
If a food has under 500 calories then is it a low, medium or high energy food?
Under 500 calories is a low energy food
If a food has between 500 to 1000 calories is it a low, medium or high energy food?
Between 500 to 1000 calories is a medium energy food.
If a food has over 1000 calories is it a low, medium or high energy food?
Over 1000 calories is a high energy food
How many calories does the average adult need to survive a day?
An adult needs 2,000 calories to live
Which of the following is NOT a fossil fuel?
Coal
Oil
Gas
Wind
Wind
Fossil fuels are formed from:
Water
Electricity
Dead plants and animals
Rocks
Dead plants and animals
Electricity is not a fuel because it is: Easy to switch on a and off It cannot be used to make cars run If had been generated using other energy resources It can burn you
It has been generated using other energy resources
Which of the following is NOT true Energy can be used to heat things Energy can be destroyed Energy can be changed Energy can be wasted
Energy can be destroyed
Why do we need to save energy? To pay for new cars Fossil fuels are running out Electricity is running out To pay for new cars
Fossil fuels are running out
Which of these would NOT help us to use less energy for transport?
Using a car that could go further for every litre of petrol
Using a bus instead of going by car
Always using the car for short journeys
Walking to school
Always using the car for short journeys
How could we save energy on heating our homes?
Keep the house warmer and open the windows
Keep the house cooler and wear a jumper
Make sure we leave the heating on when we are out
Turn the heat up at night, so we don’t need blankets on the bed
Keep the house cooler and wear a jumper
Which of these things might happen if you walked to school instead of going by car?
You might get wet is it rained
It might take you longer to get to school
You would be healthier and fitter
All of them
All of them
Which is true?
Renewable energy resources will not run out
Non-renewable energy resources will not run out
None of our energy resources will run out
Renewable energy sources will not run out
Which of these is a non renewable energy resource? Solar Wind Natural gas Moving water
Natural gas
Which statement is true?
Solar panels are used to generate electricity
Solar cells and solar panels are the same
Solar cells are used to generate electricity
Solar cells are used to heat wate
Solar cells are used to generate electricity
Biomass is: A heavy weight Any fuel made from plant or animal material Fuel made from plant material only Fuel made from animal material only
Any fuel made from plant or animal material
Our bodies get the energy they need from: Food Water Warm clothes Hot baths
Food
The units for measuring energy are: Horsepower Degrees Joules Newtons
Joules
People who dig holes on the road he a lot of energy in their food because: They have long tea breaks They always forget their sandwiches They sometimes have to work in the rain They use a lot of energy while they work
They use a lot of energy while they work
You can find out how many energy is in a peanut by:
Burning it and seeing how hot it make a test tube of water
Eating it and seeing how full you feel
Weighing it
Seeing what colour it is
Burning it and seeing how hot it makes a test tube of water
Plants get their energy from Water Fertiliser The sun The soil
The sun
