1) Cognitive prep: focus on reflection of behaviour; aims to see irrationality of behaviour and assess triggers.
2) Skills acquisition: taught to control triggers of anger - different ways.
3) Application theory - extension feedback; role play with therapist - deliberately provoke - assess if strategies are working.

ART - Aggression Replacement Training
Challenges offenders to accept responsibility for their behaviour.
CALM
Assist offenders in understanding their triggers and learn skills to manage emotions.

+ CALM is effective is reducing anger in violent offenders.
+ Supported by Dowden et al.

+ Looked at anger levels before and after anger management - some improvement compared to control group.
Conclusion
- Needs “informed consent” and not always clear its been given.
+ Benefits prison staff - less aggressive prisoners.
+/- Successful but a high drop out rate.
+/- Success depends on co-operation and participation of offenders.
+ Most effective with those with high levels of anger/aggression.
+ Reducing anger may lead to less offending - gains to society and economy.
