Soluble Oxalate Plants (poisonous Plants 1) Flashcards
Spp susceptible
All; especially cattle and sheep
Sources
Beets and dock, halogeton, lamb quarters, greasewood, rhubarb, tropical grasses, soursob
MOA
Complex w/ serum Ca2+ forming calcium oxalate
(Causeing hypocalcemia & urine crystals)
Target organs
GIT & kidney
Clinical signs
Ruminal atony, bloat, twitching, ataxia, teeth grinding, seizures, death
Tx
Decontamination, IV calcium gluconate, IV fluid diuresis, analgesics, GIT protectants, pain meds
Prognosis
Poor
Halogeton causes
Severe nephrosis w/ uremia and hypocalcemia
Tp of halogeton
Sodium oxalate
Tp of curly dock
Oxalates
Examples of cardiac glycosides
Fox glove, oleander, lily of the valley, asclepias spp, dogbane
Foxglove tp
Digitoxin, saponins, alkaloids
Foxglove MOA
Inhibit sodium-potassium atpase enzyme -> high intracellular Na which is exchanges for Ca2+, causing increased myocardial contractility (decreasing intracellular K+)
Target organs of fox glove
Cns & git
Clinical signs of foxglove
Vomit, bloody diarrhea
Tx for fox glove
Digoxin fab
Tp for oleander
Cardiac glycoside
Oleander target organs
CVS and GIT
Clinical signs of oleander
- vomit, colic, diarrhea, low HR, arrhythmias, etc
Tp of lily of the valley
Vomiting, trembling, colic, diarrhea, gastroenteritis, hyperkalemia, av block, petechial hemorrhage, death
Tp of lily of the valley
Cardiac glycosides and saponins in the leaves, flowers, and rhizomes
Tp for kalanchoe
Cardiac glycoside
Signs of kalanchoe
Depression, increased rr, teeth grinding, ataxia, paralysis, death
2 types of asclepias species
A. Tuberosa and A. Subverticillata
