Antidotes Flashcards

1
Q

Antidotes

A
  • specific actions against activity/effect of poisons
  • can become toxic
  • adverse effects possible; less likely if diagnosis correct
  • decontamination not carried out 1st

  • not FDA approved
17
Q

Anticoagulant Rodenticides

A
  • Tx: Phytonadione (Vitamin K1)
  • adverse effects: IV use can casue anaphlyactic rxns, bleeding @ injection site
  • warfarin is example
18
Q

Cholecalciferol rodenticide

A
  • Tx: calcitonin
19
Q

Atropine sulfate (antidote)

A
  • used for organophosphate poisoning
  • short 1/2 life, repeat doses if needed
  • Adverse rxns: CNS depression and disorientation, dry mucous membranes, hypomotility GIT
20
Q

Pralidoxime Chloride (Antidote)

A
  • used as reversal for organophosphate toxicosis
  • most effective if given within 24 hrs
  • effective after 24 hrs in delayed dermal absorption
21
Q

Cyanide poisoning

A
  • Tx: sodium nitrate and sodium thiosulfate
  • large thiosulfate doses w/o nitrate also helpful
