Solubility and Solutions Flashcards
A solute dissolves in a solvent to make a solution.
:)
A substance which dissolves is said to be……
soluble
A substance which does not dissolve is said to be
insoluble.
How were you able to tell that a substance was soluble?
It completely dissolved. There was no solute still visible
How were you able to tell that a substance was insoluble?
It did not dissolve. The solute could still be seen.
What is meant by the term “saturated solution”?
A saturated solution is one which can dissolve no more solute into
the solvent.
How can a super-saturated solution be made?
A super saturated solution can be made by raising the temperature
or pressure of a solvent.
What happens to the particles in a liquid when the liquid is heated?
Why does this allow more solute to dissolve?
When you heat a solvent the particles gain more energy, move
faster and the spaces in between the particles are bigger. This
means that the solvent can hold more solute.
What do you think will happen to a super-saturated solution when it
cools?
When the super-saturated solution cools the spaces become
smaller and the solute crystallises out. (goes back to being solid).
