periodic table Flashcards
what is an element
it is a substance made up from only one type of atom
approximately how many elements are there
118
Name the Russian scientist who began to put together the periodic table as we know it today
Mendeleev
How did he group the elements together?
He grouped them together based on their chemical properties
He left some spaces in his periodic table. Why was this?
He knew that there must be elements that hadn’t been discovered yet so he left spaces to allow them to be inserted in the correct places easily.
is potassium a metal or non-metal
metal
is Argon a metal or non-metal
non-metal
what is the symbol for Bromine
Br
what is the symbol for Phosphorous
P
will all metals and non-metal conduct electricity
Metal will conduct electricity, non-metals won’t except carbon in the form of graphite
what are the four groups that the periodic table are grouped into
Alkali metals
Transition metals
Halogens
Noble gases
what group of the periodic table is iron in
Transition metal
what group of the periodic table is Helium in
Noble gases
what group of the periodic table is potassium in
Alkali metals
what group of the periodic table is Fluorine in
Halogens
Describe the appearance of the alkali metals.
Dull grey metals. Soft to cut
The alkali metals are stored in oil. Why is this?
They are very reactive with water in the air
Where can the noble gases be found?
Small quantities in the air
What can we say about the general reactivity of the noble gases?
They are very unreactive
how did the noble gases became known as ‘noble’ gases.
They are highly unreactive, therefore noble as they are not reacting to other elements
Name 4 halogens.
Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine
What can be said about the general reactivity of halogens?
Very reactive, reducing in activity as you go down the group
All substances are made up of trillions of tiny particles called……
atoms
