Solubility Flashcards
What is a solution ?
A mixture of a solute and a solvent that does not separate out
What is a solute ?
The substance being dissolved into a solvent
What is a solvent?
The liquid a solute dissolves into
What is a saturated solution?
A solution where the maximum amount of solute has already been dissolved in the solvent. No more solute can dissovle.
What is solubility?
The maximum amount of a given substance (solute) that will dissolve into a solvent at a certain temperature?
What is the relationship between temperature and solubility?
Most substance becomes more soluble when heated
Solubility rules
All nitrates are soluble
All common sodium, potassium and ammonium salts are soluble
All common chlorides are soluble except silver chloride and lead chloride
All common sulfates are soluble except lead sulfate, barium sulfate and calcium sulfate,
All common carbonates are insoluble except sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, ammonium carbonate
All common hydroxides insoluble except sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide
What colour is zinc sulfate solution?
Colourless
What colour is copper(II) sulfate solution ?
Blue
