Non metal reactivity trends (TOPIC 12) Flashcards
Colour and state at room temp of Bromine
Red/brown Liquid
Gives off orange vapour at room temperature
Colour and state at room temp of Chlorine
Green
Gas
Colour and state at room temp of Iodine
Dark grey crystalline solid
Gives off purple vapour when heated
What is the trend in reactivity in Halogens?
More reactive higher up the group
What is the trend in colour and boiling point in Halogens?
Darker and higher boiling point further down the group.
Why does reactivity decrease in Halogens when going down the group?
More shielding
Outer shell is further away from the nucleus which there is less attraction between outer electron and nucleus - harder to attract the extra electron to fill the outer shell
What is the rule in the displacement of halogens?
Most reactive halogen displaces less reactive halide.
Are all halogens diatomic molecules?
YES
