Solids, Liquids And Gases Flashcards
What characteristics do a solid’s particles have
They are close together and arranged regularly, they are held together by strong bonds, they can vibrate in a fixed position and can’t move place to place
What characteristics does a liquid’ particles have
Their particles are touching and arranged randomly and irregularly. They can also move around and slip over or past each other.
What characteristics does a gas’ particles have
They are far apart and arranged randomly and irregularly. They can move quickly in any direction and don’t touch unless they collide
What do the particles depend on to stick together
The material, the temperature, the pressure
What is density
How heavy something is for its size
E.g a solid usually has high density, meaning it is heavy for its size
What is compressibility
How easily something can be squashed
