Software Flashcards
System software
System software includes Windows, Linux and OSX.
Without system software, your computer won’t turn on. System software starts up the computer and provides a platform for software to run and it also interacts and controls the hardware.
Application software
Application software is the programs you run on your computer. They will usually fall into the categories of word processing, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, presentation, communication, graphics, entertainment, diagnostics and utility.
Disk cleanup
When you run disk cleanup software it frees up space on your hard drive by deleting temporary files, emptying the recycling bin, removing components from previous windows installations and removing programs that you don’t use anymore.
Disk backup
Keep your data safe by making a copy and keeping it in a safe location. This is also a part of disaster recovery. If your computer is stolen, your backup can be used as part of a disaster recovery programme. There are three types of backup techniques:
Full- backs up every thing on your computer.
Differential- backs up everything that’s changed since the last backup.
Incremental- similar to differential, but backs up only since the last incremental backup.
Disk defragmentation
When a program is installed on your computer, the program’s files may be broken up over multiple locations on your hard drive. This is called fragmentation. Disk defragmentation optimises the performance of your computer by recognising the files on your hard drive into contiguous blocks.
Anti-virus
Keeps the bad shit off your computer.
