Softball Rules (8)
- No bunting
- Pegging is not allowed nor will it be tolerated
Pitching (2)
- Pitch must arc between 6’ to 12’
- The ball must be thrown underhand.
Batting (2)
-Batters must follow the same order throughout the whole game
- The batter is out if and when: 3 strikes have occurred, a fly ball is caught or a
batted ground ball results in a force out at a base
Base running (8)
- Runners must touch each base in order, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, home
- Runners may overrun 1st base and home plate only, all other bases the runner may be tagged and called out if they are off the base
- Runners must be on base until the ball has been hit
- No stealing
- No leadoffs
- One base runner cannot pass another base runner that is ahead of them. If this occurs the runner who is passed is out
Fielding (5)
- Do not back pedal when going for a fly ball
- Stay on the balls of your feet
- Catch a ball using both hands
- Always communicate and back up your fielders
- Step with your opposite foot (from throwing hand) while throwing the ball
Ball-
A legally pitched ball that does not enter the strike zone (four balls equals a walk)
Batting order
Order in which players on a team must bat
Count
How many balls and strikes you have as you are batting
Double-
A hit that permits the batter to reach second base
Double Play-
Two offensive players are put out in one play
Error-
A mistake by the defensive team
Grounder-
- A ball that is hit on the ground
Force out-
When a fielder has possession of the ball at a base where the baserunner was forced to run- do not need to tag the runner
Foul Ball-
A ball that first touches an object or player outside of the foul line. It is considered a strike on the batter, if the batter has less than a two strike count.
Fly ball
Ball hit up in the air to the outfield
Grand Slam
A homerun with bases loaded
Inning-
That portion of the game within which the teams alternate in the field and at bat. Each team gets three outs only!
On deck
The person who is next in line to hit
Pop up-
Ball hit up in the air to the infield
Single-
A hit that permits the batter to reach first base
Stealing-
Act of baserunner attempting to advance to the next base during a pitch- not allowed in slow pitch.
Strike-
-Term used when a ball is swung at and missed or is called when the ball enters the strike zone and is not swung at all, or a foul ball
Strike zone
The ball passes the batter over the plate between their chest and knees
Triple-
A hit that permits the batter to reach third base
