BOXING OUT
When a player has established position under the backboard in order to prevent an opposing player from getting the rebound.
DOUBLE DRIBBLE:
1) You pick up your dribble and then start dribbling again.
2) You dribble the ball with 2 hands at the same time.
FREE THROW:
A player can score one or two points by unhindered shots for a goal within the circle and behind the free throw line. They are awarded this if they are in the bonus or if they are fouled in the act of shooting. They are worth 1 point each.
FIELD GOAL:
A basket scored from the field.
MAN-TO-MAN DEFENSE
A defensive strategy where one person guards the same person during game play.
PERSONAL FOUL
A player foul which involves contact with an opponent while the ball is alive or after the ball is in possession of a player. Fouls include pushing, reaching, and holding
PIVOT
A player who is holding the ball steps once or more in any direction with the same foot while the other foot (called the pivot foot) maintains contact with the floor.
PLAYERS
In a regulation basketball game, there are 5 players from each team on the court
REBOUND
A term used when you get possession of the ball off of a missed shot.
TRAVELING
When a player in possession of the ball progresses illegally in any direction.
TRIPLE THREAT:
When receiving the ball you catch it in a position so you can do all three options: shoot, dribble, pass.

Self officiate. Each team has a captain and it is the captain’s responsibility to decide rule discrepancies

Set up an agreed upon boundary lines at the beginning of each game

Who keeps score and what shots are worth how many points
Keep score. Captain of the winning team will record score. Basket inside the 3 point arc
is worth 2 points, outside the 3 point arc is worth 3 points.

When to check the ball
Check the ball at the top of the key at the beginning of the game, after a called foul,
after the ball goes out of bounds, and after a made shot.

Jump ball will be handled as a possession change (defense gets the ball)

No make it, take it. After a made shot, the defensive team gets the ball.

Free back rule
If the ball hits the RIM and the defensive team gets the rebound, they are to take the ball back to the top of the key. During this time, the team that missed the shot CANNOT try to steal the ball (free backs). If they ball does not hit the rim, the defensive team does not need to take the ball back
Fundamentals:
CHEST PASS
- Stand with feet shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent
- Hold the ball with your fingers. Fingers should be on the side of the ball and thumbs
should be towards the back of the ball. - Step into your pass
- Extend your arms outward and flip the thumbs downward, putting a backspin on the ball.
- Focus your eyes towards your teammate
- Objective is to pass the ball to your partner’s chest
Fundamentals:
BOUNCE PASS
- Stand with feet shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent
- Hold the ball with your fingers. Fingers should be on the side of the ball and thumbs should be towards the back of the ball
- Step into your pass
- Extend your arms outward and flip the thumbs downward, putting a backspin on the ball
- Focus your eyes 2/3 a way on the ground between you and your partner
- Objective is for the pass to bounce off the ground to your partner’s waist
Fundamentals: SKIP PASS (used for distance)
- Hold the ball with both hands above your head
- Extend arms and flick your wrists
- Step into your pass
- Release the ball at your forehead
- Focus your eyes towards your teammate
- Objective is to pass the ball to your partner’s chest
Fundamentals:
DRIBBLING
- Feet should be shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent
- Slight bend in the waist
- Keep your eyes up (don’t watch yourself dribble)
- Use your finger pads (not palm or tips)
- Keep ball at your waist or lower
- Use your free arm to protect the ball from the defense
Fundamentals:
SHOOTING A JUMP SHOT
B= BALANCE - Feet should be shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent
E= ELBOW - Elbow is directly under your shooting hand - Shooting hand faces the target
with the ball resting in your fingers around shoulder height - Non-shooting hand is a
guide on the side of the ball
E= EYES - Eyes on target
F= follow through - Follow through with arm extended and palm towards the ground

SHOOTING A LAY UP
Right handed lay up: Shoot the ball with your right hand and your right knee should be in the air
- Left handed lay up: Shoot the ball with your left hand and your left knee should be in the air
