Soft Tissue Injuries - Class 6 Flashcards
strain
refers to an injury to the musculotendinous unit
typically less severe
sprain
severe stress, stretch or tear of joint capsule or ligament
dislocation
displacement of bone of a joint
resulting in loss of normal relationship
–>leading to soft tissue damage, inflammation, pain, muscle spasm
subluxation
incomplete or partial dislocation that typically involves trauma to surrounding soft tissue
muscle/tendon rupture or tear
disruption of the normal structure of a muscle or tendon
complete tear often times do not cause pain when contracted or stretched as the impart no force through the injury site
tendinopathy
catch all term for injury to tendon unit
a continuum of tendon health ranging from inflammation to degeneration of the tendon
inflammation of a tendon
tendonitis
degeneration of the tendon
tendinosis
synovitis
inflammation of the synovial membrane of a joint
hemarthrosis
ballooning of tendon sheath or wall of a joint capsule
bursitis
inflammation of bursae
contusion
bruising from a direct blow to soft tissue
severity of tissue injury
grades 1, 2, 3
grade 1 soft tissue injury
mild pain at the time of injury or w/in first 24 hours
presentation of grade 1 injury
mild swelling
local tenderness
pain w/ tissue stress
grade 2 soft tissue injury
moderate pain that requires stopping activity and stress
grade 2 presentation
palpation of tissue significantly increases pain
grade 2 ligament injury
some fibers of the tissue are torn
resulting in increased joint laxity
grade 3 soft tissue injury
near complete or complete tear or avulsion of the tissue
grade 3 presentation
severe pain
tissue stress typically painless
palpation may reveal defect
grade 3
torn ligaments result in stability of the joint
