Soft Tissue Assessment Flashcards
What’s overuse
Performing a task with a frequency that doesn’t allow tissue to recover and symptoms may be due to a lack of muscle strength or endurance
What’s misuse
Using improper form or equipment which puts abnormal stress on tissues
Abuse
Having excessive force going through normal tissues
What are the symptoms for a muscle tear or ligament tear
Pain or tenderness, redness or bruising, limited motion, muscle spasm, swelling, muscle weakness, can’t weight near
Symptoms for tendon disorder
Onset gradual, aggravated on activity, depends where tendon is, rest makes it feel better
What does mechanotherapy do
Loads tissue, stimulates cellular response, tissue is more robust and resilient, keep loading tissue at repeated time periods, switches on cells repeatedly becomes more able to cope with stresses upon it maintain homeostasis= less pain
What’s the healing process of soft tissue
Remodelling phase- formation of intra and extra molecular cross linkages between collagen fibres, aim of treatment is to restore viscoelastic properties by promoting hysteresis, creep and plastic deformation
How can you assess muscle and tendon tissue
AROM/ PROM, length, strength, isometric, palpate for tenderness, endurance, power, motor control
How does AROM/ PROM assess muscle and tendon tissue
Differential diagnosis, AROM moves inert and contractile tissue, PROM only moves inert tissue, if PROM is painful and doesn’t go to full range could indicate inert problem if PROM pain free could indicate muscle or tendon issue
How does length assess muscle and tendon tissue
Stretch tendon, does it generate symptoms? Normal resiliency?
How does strength assess muscle and tendon tissue
Oxford grading, full ROM
How does isometric testing assess muscle and tendon tissue
Pain provocation, static test doesn’t allow muscle to work concentrically or eccentrically
What’s a pain provocation test
Pain provocation is noted. Test results are considered positive if the test increases or reproduces the patient’s symptoms.
How can you assess ligaments
Length end feel and pain response, accessory tests
