Society
An organised group of people associated form some specific purpose or with a shared common interest
Socialisation
A lifelong process where members of a society learn its norms, values, ideas, practices and roles in order to take their place in that society
Internalisation
The learning of values or attitudes that are incorporated within yourself
Gender socialisation
The act of learning to conform to culturally defied gender roles through socialisation
Social control
Ways in which people’s thoughts, feelings, appearances and behaviour are regulated in societies
Institution
An established organisation founded for a religious, educational, professional or social purpose
Social change
An alteration in the social order of a society over time
Social issues
Problems that affect many people within a society
Inequality
The unfair situation were resources or opportunities are distributed unevenly within a society
Social processes
The ways in which individuals and groups interact, adjust and readjust and establish relationships and patterns of behaviour which are modified through social interactions. The ways in which socialisation occurs such as playing, talking and interacting with family, peer groups, teachers and older children
Social interactions
When individuals or groups influence the behaviour of each other
Social Stratification
A type of social inequality where society is divided into different levels on the basis of a social characteristics, such as wealth or status
Social class
Defining social inequalities e.g certain groups have more access to wealth, income and power than others
Prejudice
Preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or experience
Discrimination
The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things
Social structures
Organised pattern of social relationships and institutions that make up society
Stratification
A type of social inequality where society is divided into different levels on the basis of a social characteristic, such as wealth or status
Channelling
Ethnic minorities may be pushed into certain sports and even certain positions within a team, based on assumptions about them
County Sport Partnerships
National networks of local agencies working together to increase numbers in sport

The study of how individuals behave within a society

Social action theory
A way of viewing socialisation, emphasising social action
Stacking
The disproportionate concentration of ethnic minorities in certain positions in sports teams which end to be based on the stereotype that they are more valuable for the physicality than their decision making
Whole sport plans
A business plan/document submitted to Sport England outlining each NGB’s strategies to grow participation and enhance talent over the four year period the WSP is in operation
