Nature vs nurture debate
Debate wether human behaviour is the result of human biology (nature) or if it is the result of culture (nurture), sociologists taking the latter view
Socialisation
Lifelong process by which individuals start to learn the common norms and values of a society
Starts to begin with family, this is seen as primary socialisation however it is also followed by secondary agencies of socialisation like education
Functionalists
They believe that successful socialisation causes people to grow up to be law abiding citizens in which they can conform to societys expectation to the fullest
Belief that society needs social order wnd structure in order to function
Primary socialisation
Inititial socialisation into a societys culture a person goes through their childhood, family would be a direct source for this.
Functionilist sociologist Parsons- describes family as a personality factor as persons create a child with identity and social qualities that fit within societal expectations
Use of rewards and punishments helps eliminate socially deviant behaviour and encourage social conformity. Parents can also acts as role models as children start to imitate their actions/behaviours - modeling
New right theory
New right sociologists argue that socialisation is becoming less affective due to increasing trends like divorce or single parent families
New right is the belief that the state, media , and peer group all undermine the process of socialisatij
