It had only been constrcuted by biomedical professionals in the mass media, insists that disabled people’s identity is shaped by their mental and or physical impairments, this consequently suggests that they are unable to live a “normal life” like the able bodied
Also seen as tragic and deserving of peoplescare, media plays into this such as charity adverts like “children in need”
Social construction
Shakespeare and Barnes, a disabled sociologist disagrees sith the critical traditiobal world view on those who are disabled.
States disability is no more or a social cobstruction that those who are disabled are disabled by society
Harmful view of disabled identity, allows discrimination towards the disabled and prevents them to live independent lives
Media
Depicts disabled people as something to be pitied , and or charity.
Rarely have any positive representations or disabled people as “people who happen to have a disability”
Environment
Physical environment may not be adjusted to a disabled persons needs like toilets, access to buildings,transport

Evidence of hate crimes towards disabled people

Argues that prejudice snd discrimination towards disabled people has a significanr effect on their self esteem snd identity
A self fulfilling prophecy cohld result , where rhe disabled person ends up internalising these negative labels and this fan cause dependency
Found that blind people rely on sighted people
