Sexuality Flashcards
Biology vs culture
Theories are split in half into those who see it as a product of biology and those who view it as a social construct
Widespread belief that it is biological
However sociologists, would reject this snd often even say that it is a choice…than something biologically determined
Compulsory heterosexuality
When society constantly bombards you with images of straight couples or images of the sort , as they are “right” sexual lifestyle

Sexuality is much more of a thing that is linked with identity with somebody when they are gay rather than straight
Homosexuality in britain
In the early 20th century of Britain, homosexuality was seen as socially deviant and an abnomal sexuality, as there was this emphasis of reproduction being linked towards sexuality.
However , shifts started to occur in Britain as throughout the years it had slowwly became decriminalised , 1960s - became legal for those over 21 to have legally consenting sex.
1970s- homosexuality now isnt listed as a psychiatric condition
90s-2000s- Age of consent lowered , its now 16 years of age
Hegemonic masculinity states that men arent real men if theyre gay
2014/13-marriage is legal
Heterosexuality is socially constructed
Heterosexuality is seen as a social construction as theres a belief that men and women have different secualities despite still being “heterosexual”
Males are the promiscuous predators, where women are meant to be passive and end up preferring love over sex
Because of this, womens sexual identity carries risks as they may be defined as a “slag” by others if they behave in a similar fashion as men do
