Secondary socialisation definition
The process of learning appropiate behaviours through other agents such as education , peer group, religon
Education
Most influential agent of secondary socialisation as children spend the most time here.
Sociologists argue that there is a hidden curriculum- the way which school rules, teaching styles + routines can affect a childs behaviour
Agencies of socialisation
Plays a huge role in our socialisation
Groups or institutions in which we learn the norms and values of society
Peer group
Peers are those of a similar age group and can have an important role during socialisation during the years of 5-18 years old as you would be constantly around them
A lot of socially acceptable behaviours is learnt during this time period due to a need to fit in
Peers can also be more influential than parents and even can be a source of rebellion, for example : goths, emos or etc, are youth cultures with peers rhat resists the values and norms of wider society
Evidence for peer groups
Skelton and Francis (2003) looked at peer groups in primary schools and saw that it was very gendered
For example boys dominated the space in playgrounds where as girls took part in their own activities such as skipping
Media
British criminlogist Jock young in 2007 argues fhag media is responsible for criminality
States that there is a bullimic society where there is a constant hunger for materilistic possesions or consumer goods even while having little money for it
Worshipping sucess, money while being SYSTEMATICALLY EXCLUDED from it
Creates a mentality of “Get rich or die trying”- encourages criminality amongst youth with poor backgrounds
Religon
Religon has been on the decline as British Society starts to grow much more secular , however this is different for those in different cultural backgrounds
Berthoud + Madood (1997) conducteda survey and found 65 percent of Pakistani + Bengladeshi British youth felt religon was VERY important
Where 5 percent of Whites did
In a multi faitg society, religon will affect different types people more
Workplace
Key agent of socialisation for adults , coined as resocialisation, as thered be a new set of norms and values that theyd learn
‘Canteen culture’ describes a set of norms and values that those who work of a particular organisation will be socialised to learn such as particular language or behaviours
Can be used to explain racism within the police force
Social control
Processes by which society ends up ensuring people will conform to its culture
Two types: Informal + Formal Social Control
Formal Social control
Maintaining rule of law in society
Informal social control
A function carried out by all the agencies of socialisation (they all play a part).
Refers to control of deviance within society
Cohen 1985
Describes how social control changed over the years , in a pre industrial society it was much more simple
Social control was public such as hanging , punishments focused on body, and social control was only conducted by the government
Contemporary society
Much more complex
Focus on mind rather than body e.g cctv makes us more likely to feel like we are being vonstantly watched
Control stems from all parts of society, school, jobs, government , security etc
Range of institutions that carry oit social control increased

Was severely underveloped in every way, physically , intellectually and socially. Father claimed to be protecting her due to thinkint she was mentally r**tarded, was strapped to a potty chair and thats all
Showed no progress with language after a certain while, abd missed the formative years of key devlopment and socialisation
Twin studies
Bouchard conducted a study on identical twins that were seperated at birth, Oskar and Jack. Oskar raised bu his Grandma of catholic faith in Germany, and Jack raised in the Carribean by his father under the Jewish faith
Bouchard found that their likes, dislikes, interests, temperments were all strikingly similar despite never growing up with each other
