nationality
The legal relationship between an individual person and a state.
Nationality affords the state jurisdiction over the person and affords the person the protection of the state.
national identity
National identity = the feeling of being part of a larger group in the form of a nation – where there are shared norms, values, beliefs, traditions, history
Extreme and Civic Nationalism
Extreme Nationalism – may lead to extreme behaviour and conflict. Overt symbols used to differentiate ‘us’ and ‘them’ – intolerance of ‘others’
Civic Nationalism – Encouraged by Governments to bring people together who may have diverse backgrounds
Teaching common history is often seen as a way to create this identity
Symbols of flags, sports teams and national holidays may help to bring this about

How are we socialised into British Identity
Common language-English is seen as central to our cultural identity
Education-The teaching of history ,English is literature and religion in British schools tend to promote National identity
National Rituals -royal and state occasion are used to reinforce the British way of life and the public are intivited to take part usually via television
Mass media-television,magazines and news papers encourage people to identity with national symbols
mass production of fashion and tastes-british can be embodied in particular foods

British identity may be under threat in the 21st century because of 4 reasons :
1) Celtic identity-has always been a power source of identity in those countries especially Scotland and has recently been given political and legal legitimacy
2)Globalisation -globalisation is becoming more significant as transantional companies and international financial markets increasingly dominate world trade
3)multiculturalism-the multicultural nature of british scoiety is seen to be having an effect on british national identity
4)English identity
