What are customs
A cultural idea that describes a regular patterned behaviour that is considered characteristic of life in a social system
What are roles
The behaviour expected of an individual who occupies a given social position or status
What are negative sanctions
Punishments for violating norms
What is secondary socialisation
When a child learns beliefs and attitudes of their culture through those outside of the family e.g. teachers, friends and the media
What is primary socialisation
The first stage of socialisation where the norms and values are taught to a child within the family
What is Achieved status
A social position that a person can acquire on the basis of merit and is earned or chosen
What is ascribed status
The social status of a person that is assigned at birth or assumed involuntary later in life
What is culture
The languages, customs, beliefs, rules, arts, knowledge and collective identities and memories of all social groups that make their social environments meaningful
What are norms
Rules or expectations that are socially enforced
What are values
Intangible qualities or beliefs accepted and endorsed by a given society
What are positive sanctions
Rewards given for conforming to norms
What are agents of socialisation
A combination of social groups and social institutions that provide the first experiences of socialisation
