Education - Ethnicity & Achievement (Internal Factors) Flashcards
SOCIOLOGIST: What did Gillborn & Youdell say about Black pupils & discipline regarding to labelling & teacher racism?
Teachers are quicker to discipline black pupils than others for the same behaviour due to their ‘racialised expectations’ of them. They expected black pupils too present more discipline problems & often misinterpreted their behaviour as threatening or to challenge authority. They concluded that much of the conflict between white teachers and black students stems from racial stereotypes rather than their actual behaviour
SOCIOLOGIST: Due to this, what does Bourne say that this can affect black boys?
May explain the high exclusion rate of black boys which heavily effects their own achievement -> 1 in 5 excluded pupils succeed 5 GCSEs
Black students are also more likely to be placed in lower sets/streams due to these negative stereotypes about their ability.
SOCIOLOGIST: What did Osler say about black pupils & internal exclusion?
Black students are more likely to be placed in internal exclusion in school or placed in pupil referral units (PRUs) which excludes them from mainstream education - affects achievement
SOCIOLOGIST: What were the 3 pupil identities Archer proposed?
The ‘ideal pupil’
The ‘pathologised pupil’
The ‘demonised pupil’
What is the ‘ideal pupil’ identity?
A white, middle-class, masculinised & heterosexual identity, seen as stereotypically achieving in the ‘right’ way through natural ability & initiative
What is the ‘pathologised pupil’ identity?
An Asian, ‘deserving poor’, feminised identity who has an asexual or oppressed sexuality, seen as an ‘overachiever’ who achieves through hard work over natural ability
What is the ‘demonised pupil’ identity?
A white or black, working-class, hyper sexualised identity, seen as stereotypically unintelligent, culturally deprived, peer led & an underachiever.
Which identities are teachers most likely to label ethnic minority groups?
The demonised & pathologised pupil identity
SOCIOLOGIST: What was the Fuller’s study on pupil responses & subcultures?
Studied a group of year 11 black girls from a comprehensive school in London, who were high achievers. Found that the girls channelled their anger about being labelled into pursuing educational success & didn’t seek the teacher’s approval, as well as, only conforming to the school as far as schoolwork was concerned and showed a lack of consideration for the school routines. The girl’s behaviour was seen as a way of dealing with the contradictory demands of succeeding at school whilst still being freinds with black girls from lower streams.
SOCIOLOGIST: What did Fuller conclude from the study?
Highlighted that it is possible for students to succeed even if they refuse to conform & that negative labelling doesnt determine educational failure.
SOCIOLOGIST: What were the 3 types of teacher racism pointed out by Mirza?
The ‘colour-blind’
The ‘liberal chauvinists’
The ‘overt racists’
What is the ‘colour-blind’ teacher racism?
Teachers who believe all pupils are equal but allow racism to go unchallenged in practice
What is the liberal chauvinists teacher racism?
Teachers who believe all black pupils are culturally deprived & therefore have low expectations of them.
What is the overt racist teacher racism?
Teachers who believe all black people are inferior & actively discriminate against them
What is a criticism of Fuller’s study as pointed out by Mirza?
Much of the girl’s time in the study was spent trying to avoid the negative effects of the teacher’s attitudes which ultimately left them disadvantaged as they missed out on opportunities as a result.
