What is the locus of control?
Refers to a person’s perception of personal control over their own behaviour
It is a personality explanation
What are people like that have an internal locus of control?
High internals seek out information to help themselves. They are less likely to rely on others. They are achievment orientated.
What do people with a high LOC believe about their personal control?
High levels of personal control over their lives and behaviour
They take personal responsibility for things
High LOC: pressure from others?
They resist pressure from others
External?
The belief that life is determined by external/environmental factors such as luck e.g. wrong place, wrong time

More likely to be influenced by others- they don’t believe they have personal control over their lives
What is social support?
The presence of people who resist pressures to conform/obey- these people act as models to show others that resistance is possible
Milgram: social support?
Obedience levels dropped from 65% down to 10% with another disobedient confederate was present
Asch: social support?
Presence of a dissenter lowered conformity down to 5%- conformity was 75% before
AO3 LOC:
A persons LOC is not necessarily the most important factor in determining whether someone resists social influence
A persons LOC only significantly affects their behaviour in new situations
AO3 SS:
Some people will always obey-regardless of the circumstances
Others will never obey regardless of the circumstances
Social support does not account for individual differences
