Minority Influence Flashcards
What is minority influence?
Creates a conversion whereby people consider the message itself and people want to understand why the minority hold this position.
What is minority influence likely to lead to to?
internalisation
What are the 3 ways for minority influence to happen?
Commitment
Consistency
Flexibility
What is consistency?
Repeating over a certain period of time
What are the 2 types of consistency?
Synchronic consistency
Diachronic consistency
What is synchronic consistency?
They are all saying the same thin
What is diachronic consistency
Been saying the same thing for some time now
What can dissent lead to?
Social change
What is flexibility?
Changing/adapting
What is commitment?
Staying focused/hard working
What is an example of a committed group?
Fathers for Justice- a group coming together to bring change
What is the augmentation principle?
Becoming greater in size- majority want to get involved- the minority group is now bigger and stronger
Suffering in order to get your point across e.g. people protesting for BLM in covid- risking their health for the greater good/ their point
What are the strengths of minority influence?
Real-world examples (Moscovici) shows that minority influences have direct application
Therefore, there is good external validity
What are the limitations of minority influence?
Moscovici’s experiment is low in mundane realism- ppts were not involved in a real situation
Minority influence does not happen during one experimental session- takes many years to be subsumed into a society
Also, asking PPTS the difference between green and blue slides is a very artificial task- does to occur in real life
Moscovici’s experiment?
The 2 confederates (the minority) answered green for all 36 slides- they were consistent and so 8% of the participants also answered green
When the minority were inconsistent- green was answered 24x and blue 12x, only 1% of the participants also answered green
