Definition of conformity?
Yielding to group pressure- our behaviour and beliefs are influenced by larger groups of people
What is conformity also known as?
Majority influence
What are the 3 types of conformity?
Compliance
Identification
Internalisation
Is compliance temporary or permanent?
Temporary
What is compliance?
A person goes along with other peoples behaviour/ attitude but does not believe them to be correct
Private vs public- compliance?
They comply publicly but their private opinion does not change
Why do people go along with beliefs (compliance)?
To keep the peace and gain approval

What is identification?
Individuals adjust their behaviour and opinions to those of the group as membership of the group is desirable
Public vs private: identification?
Both private and public as there is something about the group that we value
Is internalisation permanent or temporary?
Permanent
What is internalisation?
The individual accepts the group view and believes that view to be correct
Public vs private: internalisation?
Conforming to other peoples beliefs publicly and privately in the genuine belief that they are correct
What are the 2 reasons why people conform?
Informational social influence and normative social influence
What is informational social influence?
People have a need to be seen “in the right”
Why do people look to others (informational social influence)?
We look to others about how to behave as we believe that others have more knowledge
What is an example of informational social influence?
Being in a classroom and checking what other students do
What type of conformity is informational social influence?
Internalisation type of conformity
What is normative social influence?
People need to fit in with the norms of the group. People will conform then for social approval.
Public vs private: normative social influence?
Results in public agreement- not likely to change private opinion
What is an example of normative social influence?
Going to a restaurant you don’t really like just to be with your friends
