What is the three-fifths compromise?
Three-fifths compromise, compromise agreement between delegates from the Northern and the Southern states at the United States Constitutional Convention (1787) that three-fifths of the slave population would be counted for determining direct taxation and representation in the House of Representatives.
What is the dred scott case?
Dred Scott v. Sandford, 60 U.S. (19 How.) 393 (1857), was a landmark decision of the US Supreme Court in which the Court held that the US Constitution was not meant to include American citizenship for black people, regardless of whether they were enslaved or free, and so the rights and privileges that the Constitution confers upon American citizens could not apply to them
What is the Truman Doctrine?
The principle that the US should give support to countries or peoples threatened by Soviet forces or Communist insurrection. First expressed in 1947 by US President Truman in a speech to Congress seeking aid for Greece and Turkey, the doctrine was seen by the Communists as an open declaration of the Cold War.
What are the types of economies?
traditional economies, command economies, mixed economies, and market economies.
Traditional economies
Based on goods, services, and work, all of which follow certain established trends.
Command economies
There is a dominant centralized authority – usually the government – that controls a significant portion of the economic structure
Mixed economies
combine the characteristics of the market and command economic systems. For this reason, mixed systems are also known as dual systems
Market economies
There is very little government interference. The government exercises little control over resources, and it does not interfere with important segments of the economy.
What is the USA patriot act?
The USA PATRIOT Act was an Act of the United States Congress, signed into law by President George W. Bush. USA PATRIOT is a backronym for Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism.
Why did the articles of confederations fail?
the Articles of Confederation failed because they were crafted to keep the national government as weak as possible: There was no power to enforce laws. No judicial branch or national courts. Amendments needed to have a unanimous vote.
