What does prejudice mean?
An attitude [usually negative] that is held towards a particular group in society.
What is a stereotype?
Developing an idea about someone and carrying that idea forward to apply it to other similar people.
Wwhat is discrimination?
Treating someone unfairly based on their membership to a particular group in society.
What are the factors affecting prejudice?
- Upbringing
- Environment
- Previous differences
- Individual differences
- Influence by others
What is social identity theory claim?
It can be used to identify and explain prejudice because it claims that prejudice is a direct result of the formation of groups in society.
What is personal identity?
Our own unique qualities and self-esteem.
What is social identity?
The qualities of the group to which we belong.
What is an in-group?
The group we are a member of.
What is an out-group?
The group we aren’t a member of.

Social categorisation
What is component 2 of SIT?
Social identification
What is component 3 of SIT?
Social comparison
What is social categorisation?
Seeing/categorising yourself as being apart of a group.
What is social identification?
Overtly identifying with the group you are apart of, taking on the norms and attitudes of the group.
What is social comparison?
Comparing the in-group with the out-group. We degrade the out-group to boost the status of the in-group and boost our own self esteem.
