Biological Psychology - FREUD COMPARE Flashcards
What does Freud mean by unconscious?
Unconscious - not awake or aware of and responding to the environment around. It can be compared to the bulk of the iceberg that is out of right under the water. The unconscious mind contains powerful aggressive urges that would frighten and shock us if we ever became consciously aware of them.
What does Freud mean by pre-conscious?
The pre-conscious mind is the part of the mind we are occasionally aware of. It can be compared to the part of the iceberg that is below the water-line but is still visible. Aggression in dreams can be a clue to unconscious aggressive urges - but remember, dreams are always symbolic and not to be taken literally.
What does Freud mean by conscious?
Aware and responding to the surroundings around. The conscious mind is that part of the mind that we are aware of. It can be compared to the part of an iceberg that is above the water. It contains the thoughts we are currently thinking at any given moment. We might not have aggressive thoughts in our conscious mind but still be driven by aggressive urges that we aren’t aware of.
What does psychoanalysis mean?
Freud created a technique called psychoanalysis to help his patients understand their unconscious minds with the help of a trained psychologist. He believed that it could enable people to overcome problems rooted in the unconscious.
What is the ID?
ID - most basic part of the psyche. It’s the first part that develops in babies and it consists of urges and desires. It exists in the unconscious mind and is made up entirely of feelings. It’s based on the pleasure principle (it wants what it wants and wants it NOW).
What’s the ego?
Ego - second part of the psyche that develops in toddlers. It’s the thinking, decision making part of the mind. It exists in the conscious mind and is based on the reality principle because it understands the outside world, consequences and passage of time.
What’s the super-ego?
Super-ego - the final part of the psyche that develops between the ages of 4 and 6. It straddles the conscious and unconscious mind, were partly aware of it and partly not. It’s based on the morality principle and acts as the voice of consequence.
