Social Psychology Flashcards
How are social condition affecting human beings?
Individually & in groups
Attributions - how do we link behaviour to causes? (2)
- Situational : attribute behav. to external causes
- Dispositional : attribute behav. to internal causes
What are factors of fundamental attribution errors (2) and why is there a difference?
- Behaviour of others make us tend to underestimate situational and overestimate dispositional
- But, our our behaviour is situational
Difference:
- Focus of attention
- Lack of information
What are other attributional errors? (2)
- Success and failure:
- Taking credit for positive outcomes
-Blaming others for negative outcomes
Ex. : Uni students who get A’s and B’s = their good work
And those who get lower blame it on bad luck or level of difficulty of the test
What are the 3 factors of attraction?
1- proximity –> “Mere Exposure Effect” = more exposure to stimulus, more we like it
2- physical appearance –> “Halo Effect” = assume to be more sociable, popular, sexual, well-adjusted
3- similarity –> reduces conflict and negative feelings, validation for own beliefs
*opposites usually do not attract!!!
What is conformity?
- It is consciously maintaining similarity to those around you or to authority
Obedience –> Milgrim, 1961-62; What reduces obedience?
- Having to touch “learner”
- 32% went over 400 volts
- Instructions were given by phone
- M just as obedient as F, though F was more nervous
- An Ally
