3D Geography Flashcards
What are the factors of longitude? (4)
- Also called meridian
- Highest & lowest value: from 0 - 180 degrees
- Prime meridian : goes through England
- International dateline: 180 degrees
What is its significance? (Factor of longitude) (2)
- indicates time
- when the date actually changes
How many time zones in Canada?
In China?
- 5.5
- 1
What are the factors of latitude? (4)
- Also called parallels
- Highest & lowest value : from 0 (Equator) to 90 degrees
- Revolution: 365 days + 1/4
- There would be no seasons if it was straight
Is the tilt always the same?
Yes
What are seasons caused by?
The tilt of the planet
What creates hot/cold places on the planet?
The angle of the hit of the sun
How long is the revolution?
365 days
How does the planet rotate and how long does it take to do a full rotation?
- on itself
- 1 day
What is insolation?
The amount of solar energy captured by the earth
What is the problem with living on Mars?
Not enough atmosphere: -63 degrees
What is the problem with living on Venus?
Too much atmosphere: 462 degrees
What are the atmospheric layers? (4)
- Troposphere ~ 12 km thick –> Mount Everest, GHG
- Stratosphere –> contains ozone layer
- Mesosphere
- Thermosphere
What is the difference between GHG and Global Warming?
GHG are good and is a natural phenomena; GW is bad and is caused by an amplified effect
What are the causes of Global Warming? (3)
- More GHG’s than the earth can absorb and recycle
- Too much Methane (CH4)
- Climate change
What are the factors of “more GHG’s than the earth can absorb and recycle” ? (3)
- too much CO2 to absorb
- fossil fuels need to stay in the ground instead of being burnt
- need to increase “carbon sinks”, ex.: vegetation –> absorbs extra CO2
What are the causes of “too much Methane” ? (2)
- from decomposition of organic matter –> permafrost needs to stay frozen to avoid swampy land that releases methane; cattle mature = problematic (manure + digestion gases = methane)
What causes wind (air movement) ?
Principle of convection caused by a difference in temperature
What does the convection process produce and where?
Convection cells in the troposphere
What are the factors of low pressure zones? (4)
- heated air rises
- within the air, moisture rises too through evaporation
- cloud forms as the H2O condenses
- Precipitation (rain/snow/hail) falls in the zone of rising air
What are the factors of high pressure zones? (2)
- as air rises, it cools and travels to away from rising air (L) zones
- cool air : heavier than warm air, so it will drop to the ground
