- When a person conforms to behaviour of a group because there’s something they value about that group
- We identify with group, so we want to be part of it
- we publicly change behaviours to be accepted, even if we don’t privately agree with everything the group stands for

- When a person genuinely accepts a group norm
- Results in private and public change of behaviour
- change is permanent because attitudes are internalise
- even when group is absent, change in behaviour persists
