social psychological explanations of aggression Flashcards
FAH- Outline Dollard + Millar
frustration ALWAYS leads to aggression
frustration occurs when a goal is blocked
frustration increases by proximity to goal
releasing frustration is cathartic
frustration can be displaced onto weaker more available targets
FAH- Outline Geen + findings
male uni students sovling a jigsaw, 3 conditions:
1) impossible jigsaw
2) insulted by confederate
3) control
then had to give shocks to the confederate later on
insulted gave higher voltage shocks followed by impossible jigsaw and last the control
FAH- +Harris
confederate pushed into the line 2 from the front and 11 from the front- testing proximity- aggression levels higher when pushed in 2 from front, field study with unaware ppts- more validity
FAH- X bushman
found ppts who vented their anger using a punching bag did not decrease levels of aggression in fact doing nothing was more effective disproving the idea of catharsis
FAH- Geen double whopper
supports the idea of frustration leads to aggression demonstrated by higher voltage shocks but fails to take into account factors like the ppts could be acting out of revenge from the personal attacks and not bc they were frustrated
FAH- X doesn’t take into account all situations
doesn’t factor situations like serial killers, army and the fact that frustration doesn’t always lead to aggression, and aggressive ppl repeat aggression disproving the idea of catharsis.
SLT- outline
observation of a role model and vicarious reinforcement leads to the individual imitating the aggressive task and if they are rewarded it leads to direct reinforcement this behaviour becomes internalised. imitation highest when individual identifies with role model. higher levels individuals with higher self efficacy are more likely to perform this aggressive behaviour, the 4 meditational process are also required: attention, retention, reproduction, motivation
SLT- Banduras Bobo Double whopper
kids who watched role model play aggressively with the bobo doll played aggressively with the toy, higher levels of aggression when the kids identified with the role model e.g same gender
lacks mundane realism and kids could be showing demand characteristics
SLT- X Reactive aggression
doesn’t explain how kids respond to aggression reactively to retaliate in the heat of the moment e.g self defence
SLT- !kung sang double whopper
kung sang tribe don’t discipline their kids/ behave aggressively they distract instead. kids show lower levels of aggression however they still display aggression despite no aggressive role models
SLT- + real life application
kids can be encouraged to make friends with positive role models, children can be removed from aggressive households.
