Situational Attributions.
Description: behaviour attributed to internal cause or personal trait.
Dispositional Attributions.
Description: Overemphasis on internal factors when explaining others’ behaviour. Especially negative
Fundamental Attribution Error (FAE)
Description: Attribute OUR shortcomings to situational factors. Attribute OTHERS’ shortcomings to dispositional factors.
Actor-Observer Bias
Description: Attribute our success to dispositional factors and our failures to situational factors.
Self-Serving Bias
What is cognitive dissonance?
The tension that arises when there is conflict between our attitudes and behaviour.
What is conformity?
Changing one’s behaviour or attitude to be consistant with norms, expectations of group. We do this for acceptance and that if others are doing it, then it must be right.
What is social facilitation?
Group influence. The presence of others improved performance of similar or well-learned tasks. It impaired performance of complex tasks.
Being around others increases arousal which facilitates the dominant response (the behaviour we are most likely to perform in a given situation).
What are the ABC’s of attitudes?
A) emotional component. “it makes me feel great”
B) behavioural component. “I read articles about exercising”
C) cognitive component. “it is good for your health”
Describe deindividuation.
When people in groups tend to lose some of their self-awareness. They do something that is out of character for them.
What is deception?
In regards to ethics: participants are wrongly informed about the aims of the study. It im important for a natural response.
