It is critical for communication development.
Why is social communication important for school age children?
It becomes more important because its how they develop peer relationships
What are the 3 major skills within social communication?
Using language for social purposes, ability to change language, and following rules in conversation and story telling. Rules change between cultures.
What is a social communication disorder?
Difficulty with social interaction, cognition or understanding, and pragmatic language.
What is difficulty with social interaction?
Difficulty with reacting and acting towards others. Difficulty establishing relationships and maintaining them. As well as responding to nonverbal communication like eye contact, gestures, and facial expressions.
What is difficulty with cognition or understanding?
Difficulty understanding what others feel as well as not knowing how to respond in social situations. Struggles with adapting behavior appropriately.
What is difficulty with pragmatic language?
Difficulty with verbal and nonverbal skills that are used in social interactions. Difficulty using and changing language as well as following conversation rules.
When is a child diagnosed with SCD?
Signs are shown pretty early but diagnosed around age 4 when they start school.
What are the signs of SCD?
Problems using verbal and nonverbal communication for social purposes. Problems responding, using gestures; waving/pointing, as well as stating wants and needs
What are causes of SCD?
-most researchers aren’t clear of the cause
-genetic component
- neurodevelopmental disorder due to “glitch” with processing information in the right hemisphere

What is the DSM-V criteria for ASD?
Persistent deficits in social communication and interaction as well as restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests, or activities
What are the symptoms for ASD?
Delayed language development, lack of social interest, odd play patterns
When is ASD recognized?
12-24M
Examples of social communication disorder behaviors in Autistic spectrum disorders?
Poor joint attention, failure or slow to respond to name, poor eye contact, difficulty using language for wants and needs, unusual response to anger, distress or affection, difficulty participating in a conversation, echolalic behaviors, and preservation
