What is Aphasia?
It is an acquired language disorder that results from injury to the language centers of the brain.
What are some common causes of Aphasia?
Stroke which is the most common, infectious diseases like meningitis, encephalitis, as well as tumors, exposure to toxins/poisons, hydrocephalus, nutritional/metabolic disorders
What is stroke also known as?
Cerebrovascular accident aka (CVA)
What are the 2 types of strokes?
Ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke
What are some risk factors that come with aphasia?
Uncontrollable: race, gender, age, family history, hypertension, diabetes, tobacco, alcohol use,
What are some behavioral symptoms?
Some can’t initiate speech, so can but they produce extended flowery monologues
What is lack of fluency?
Non fluent aphasia
What are the symptoms of non fluent aphasia?
Short choppy phrases, grammatical errors, slow labored production
What is sensory aphasia?
It flows well but the content of language is affected
