Who were the different social parties in Russia?
• socialist revolutionaries (SR’s)
• The Kadets (Liberals)
• The Octobrists
Who were the Social Revolutionaries?
• largest social party
• formed in Kharkov 1900 (coalition of populist groups)
• Became the largest political organisation
• called for removal of tsarist gov
• lacked complicated political philosophy of marxism
The Development of the SR’s
• little more than a terrorist gang in1900
• more than 2000 political assassinations ( hated police chief von Plehve and Tsars brother in law )
• Support from the middle classes and trade unions
• boycotted the first state duma in 1906 but participated in the second
Weaknesses of the SR
• Became incredibly hard to manage due to the size of it
• Had an internal division
• Factionalism in the party but it splits and gains support from peasants
• Won majority in november elections
• 1st minister - Kerensky
The Liberals (Kadets)
• Most successful liberal party = constitutional monarchy
• Representative democracy & rule of law
• They want - Parliamentary system, civil liberties, freedom of speech, assembly
• Support war effort, officially formed in 1905
The Octobrists
• Represented in the Duma 1906
• Conservative, loyal to the Tsar
• Enthusiastic about the October manifesto as a solution to problems
• No desire for improvement on civil rights
• Support War effort, private farming, continuation of the Russian Empire
