• 100,000 workers on strike in Petrograd from 58 factories
• News of bread rationing led to queues & violent exchanges
• Police Attacked
22nd February 1917
• 20,000 workers locked out of Putilov steel works by management after pay talks collapsed
• The workers went on strike
23rd February 1917
• International Women’s Day
• 90,000 workers on strike. 50 factories closed
• Workers joined march for women from suburbs to city centre
• City in chaos, 240,000 on the streets
• Order restored by desperate police force (no loss of life)
25th Feb 1917
• 250,000 on strike
• Petrograd on standstill (All major factories and shops closed)
• Violence escalated as Shalfeev tried to control strikers
• He was dragged from his horse, beaten and shot
• Civilians killed by soldiers & Cossacks refused to attack strikers
26th February 1917
• Rodzianko (Duma President) sent Tsar a telegram, warning of the situation in Petrograd
• Nicholas ignored the warning & ordered the Duma to dissolve the next day
27th February 1917
• Tsar ordered commander of Pet military district to restore order by force
• 66,000 soldiers mutinied and joined protesters, arming them
• Police HQ attacked
• Army’s high command stopped troops from restoring order & were told to join the Duma
• Revolutionaries intended to take over government
28th February 1917
• Nicholas II left military HQ Volynskii regiment to Petrograd
• Sent telegram to Rodzianko to share power with Duma
• Reply “The measures you propose are too late. The time for them has gone. There is no return”
