Explain S.M.A.R.T:
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Relevant
Time-bound
Define a specific objective:
A clearly defined and precise result that usually cannot be broken down any further.
Provide an example of a non-specific and specific objective:
Not Specific: Human activity will be reduced near nesting sites.
Specific: There will be a 50% reduction of local beachgoers accessing the south peninsula of Norman Beach where Piping Plover nests are located.
Define a Measurable Objectives:
The results are noticeable, definite, and quantifiable.
Provide an example of a Not Measurable and Measurable objective:
Not Measurable: The public will no longer collect Drooping Trillium for wildflower garden purposes
Measurable: There will be a 50%* reduction of damaged or destroyed plants between the months of May to August is six designated locations in the Strathroy Area.
Define an Attainable Objective:
If reasonable efforts are made and internal and external factors are considered, results will likely be achieved
Provide an example of a Not Achievable Objective and and Achievable Objective:
Not Achievable: Fewer local hunters will trap hares.
Achievable: More local hunters will use the modified hare snare provided free of charge at a local Game and Fishing show.
Define a Relevant Objective:
The objective has a reasonable application to the problem at hand.
Provide an example of a not Relevant and Relevant objective:
Not Relevant: More people will recognize that poison control for coyote population may contribute to swift fox decline.
Relevant: Local residents will reduce the amount of poison used to control coyote populations and the number of times it is applied in areas around Grasslands National Park.
Define a time-bound objective:
A suitable amount of time is identified to complete the desired objective. The desired objective occurs at a suitable time for your audience.
Provide an example of a not time-bound and time-bound objective:
Not-time bound: Local landowners will participate in a naturalized shoreline program.
Time Bound: By the end of summer 2021, ten local landowners will participate in a shoreline naturalization program.
What are some key factors to successfully evaluate objectives:
- Develop your performance indicators at the beginning of your project and plan enough resources and time to measure them.
- Ensure that your objectives are SMART.
- Ensure that you have a solid baseline of data.
- Measure your results based on your objectives, not your outputs.
