social learning theory (bandura) Flashcards
what is the social learning theory
Social learning theory suggests that social behavior is learned by observing and imitating the behavior of others. Psychologist Albert Bandura developed the social learning as an alternative to the earlier work of fellow psychologist B.F. Skinner, known for his influence on behaviorism.
While behavioral psychology focuses on how the environment and reinforcement affect behavior, Bandura put forth that individuals can learn behavior through observation.

ATTENTION
RETENTION
REPRODUCTION
MOTIVATION
what is positive reinforcement
behaviour is repeated because of personal satisfaction
what is negative reinforcement
behaviour is not repeated to avoid an adverse experience
what is vicarious reinforcment
child may be motivated to repeat a behaviour if they see model getting satisfaction or positive feedback. child may resist imitating the action because they have seen the model have a negative feedback
attention
learning of behavior takes place when a child focuses their attention on a person ‘modelling’ behaviour. this would usually be someone who the child likes or admires
retention
the behaviour the child see they will keep in their memory
reproduction
the behaviour that is retained and is now is now reproduced. first a child would do their in their mind - imagine and later they will complete the behaviour practically
motivation
children feel motivated initially because they think they will get either extrinsic or extrinsic rewards (VICAROUS REWARDS) children will be motivated to do the behaviour again or stop the behaviour depending on the extrinsic or intrinsic reinforcement the receive
what is the diathesis model
the model is concerned with how stress caused by individual life events can interact with an individuals genetic vulnerability to impact upon their mental wellbeing
