Social learning theory Flashcards
What did the social learning theory (SLT) suggest?
We learn through observation of role models + then imitate their behaviour, links cognitive + learning psychology
Who developed the SLT?
Albert Bandura
What characteristics make someone a role model?
- Similar gender
- Age
- Hugh status
- If you can relate to them
What is modelling?
When individual displays behaviour in presence of someone else
What is observation?
Active process where observer chooses to focus attention on modelled behaviour (cognitive part of theory - attention)
What is imitation?
Copying observed behaviour
What must observers have to reproduce role models behaviour?
High self efficacy (belief they can do a task successfully), + low self esteem (so they want to be like someone else)
What are the 3 types of vicarious learning (learning through someone else)?
- Vicarious reinforcement
- Vicarious punishment
- Vicarious extinction
What is vicarious reinforcement?
When u imitate behaviour of someone whos been reinforced for that behaviour
E.g. Avoiding hot water bc u saw someone else be burned by it
What is vicarious punishment?
Where u are less likely to imitate a behaviour due to observing consequences for that behaviour
What is vicarious extinction?
When person imitating behaviour no longer does it since theres no reward
What are the 4 stages of SLT?
- Attention - Someone watches role model’s behaviour
- Retention - Humans store behaviour + recall when reproducing
- Reproduction - Person imitates behaviour they’ve seen modelled
- Motivation - If reward offered, more likely to do behaviour
What is vicarious motivation?
If behaviour punished then less likely to imitate + if behaviour rewarded, more likely to imitate
What is intrinsic motivation?
When theres satisfaction rather than physical outcome
E.g. Feeling good for giving to charity for nothing in return
What is extrinsic motivation?
Getting something tangible/physical
E.g. Getting reward or trophy
