Capafons et al study - SD treatment Flashcards
What is the purpose of the study?
To see if systematic desensitisation was successful in reducing the fear of flying
Why is SD good for treating fear of flying?
- Confrontation exposure - ppl travel on planes but still scared
- Can be used in vitro - not easy to recreate all scenarios in vivo
- Less dependent on therapist - success rate higher
- SD not as stressful as flooding - ppts more likely to stick to treatment
What were the 2 groups used?
Control group awaiting treatment - 9 males, 12 females
Experiment treatment group - 8 males, 12 females
How were the groups matched? (sample)
In terms of age, gender, self reported fear level, + analogous psychophysiological measures
How were the ppts interviewed? (procedure)
Individually by the research team
What did the ppts complete in the interview? (procedure)
IDG-FV
What did ppts complete in subsequent sessions? (procedure)
Self reported method of scales
What were the ppts later called back to complete? (procedure)
Psychophysiological assessment (mental + physical reactions)
Watched a video of someone taking a flight as these were measured
Describe the setting that this took place in: (procedure)
- In university
- 2x 1 hour sessions
- Temp was 22 + or - 1*C
- Ppt 1.8m from tv
- Apparatus placed behind ppt
What were the measures of DV during the first interview abt patient?
- “How afraid of flying are u”
- “Do u travel by plane when no alternative”
- “Whilst flying, have u ever had one of following symptoms: sweating, muscle tension, etc”
What was the measures of DV during the fear of flying scales?
- Fear during flight
- Fear without involvement
- Fear of flight preliminaries (e.g. checking baggage, etc)
What happened before viewing the video? (procedure)
Habituation session
How long were patient’s psychophysiological responses measured for without phobic stimuli, in assessment + recording session? (procedure)
3 mins
What did the ppt do during video? (procedure)
Told to feel as involved as possible
What was made at end of session? (procedure)
New interview appointment made
How long was the interval between 1st + 2nd session? (procedure)
8 weeks
Where was the treatment carried out? (procedure)
- In a room of 2.5m x 3.5m
- 2 seats, table, relaxing armchair
How many sessions did ppts have per week? (procedure)
2x 1 hour sessions
What was the min + max number of sessions in programme? (procedure)
12-15
What did the treatment consist of? (procedure)
- Progressive relaxation + imagination
- In vivo + in vitro elements
- Breathing techniques
What does differential analysis for control group show? (results)
Passing of time doesn’t lead to any quantitive changes in DVs
What dies differential analysis for treatment group show? (results)
Physiological measures increased
What 2 measures had no significant difference? (results)
Fear without involvement, skin surface temp
What did results show for waiting vs treatment group before treatment? (results)
Homogeneity of 2 groups of self reported fear level + objective measurements
What did results show for both groups after treatment? (results)
Significant difference for all variables except 2
With the aim of avoiding artifacts in results, what were excluded? (results)
11 DVs
What were the 2 self reported measures important in this phobia case, in the 2nd analysis? (results)
Fear during flight, avoidance behaviour
What were the objective measures recorded? (results)
Heart rate + muscle tension during take off
What was the correlation coefficient? (results)
0.85
What was the significance level of the results? (results)
0.001
What was the % of correctly classified clients? What does this show? (results)
92.7%
SD can produce clear diff between 2 groups
What is the conclusion?
Passing of time wont get rid of fear, and next time should look at why treatment doesnt work too, due to it not working for 2 treatment group patients
