Social learning theory Flashcards
Who studied social learning theory
Albert Bandura
Describe bandura’s study. (Proceedure)
He carried out a study involving children who observed aggressive and non aggressive adult models and were tested for imitative learning in the absence of a model.
Half of the children were exposed to adults being aggressive to a bobo dooll, the other half were exposed to an adult playing peacefully.
Aggressive models struck the doll alongside verbal aggressions such as ‘pow’.
Following exposure to the model, children were frustrated by being shown attractive toys they couldn’t have.
They were then taken to a room where among other toys was a bobo doll.
What were the findings of Bandura’s experiment?
Children who observed aggressive behavior from a model reproduced a large amount of physically and verbally aggressive behaviors shown by the models.
one third of the children copied the models verbal responses. None of the children who observed non aggressive behavior made such remarks.
Children who observed docile models showed practically no aggression to the doll.
In a further study, Bandura and Walters found children who watched adults being rewarded for aggressive actions were more likely to show high levels of aggression in their own play.
What is vicarious reinforcement?
When an individual is reinforced to do a behavior through observing the consequences of a models actions.
What are mediational processes?
Mediational processes are cognitive factors that influence learning and determine whether a behavior observed in others will be imitated
What are the first 2 stages of mediational processes?
Attention- the extent to which we notice behaviors.
Retention- how well the behavior is remembered.
What are the final 2 stages of mediational processes?
Motorproduction- the ability of the observer to perform the behavior.
Motivation-the will to perform the behavior, taking consequences into consideration.
What is the definition of mediational processes?
The internal mental processes that exist between environmental stimuli and the response made by an individual to those stimuli.
What is a model?
A person that a subject can identify with, or look up to.
They have characteristics such as:
High status
Attractiveness
Similar characteristics to a subject
