Social Learning Theory^ Flashcards
Social Learning Theory
its a bridge between beh and cog approach
focuses on how mental processes (cog) are involved in learning (beh)
the mental factors mediate in the learning to determine if a new response is acrequired
Bandura
agrees with beh approach
- all beh is learned from experience
- by imitation of others and judging if they want the consequences (vicarious reinforcement)
directly and indirectly through classical and operant conditioning
Vicarious Reinforcement
indirectly
look at the consequence of someone else and judge if you want it
imitation if they want to repeat the beh and get the consequence
Mediational Process
Bandura
Attention - notice beh
Retention - remember it
Motor Reproduction - perform it
Motivation - if they want to repeat it
Identification
imitate those they identify with
modelling on a role model
role model - have characteristic that the observers likes
Cognitive Factors
recognise importance
vicarious reinforcement makes judgement
process that beh app. doesn’t account for
SLT provides the more comprehensive explanation by recognising the mediational processes
Real World Applications
children learn from people and media
explains how cultural norms are transmitted through societies
helps understand diff beh
suggests that the influence of outside factors on the development of a child help support SLT
Lab Studies
Bandura’s bobo doll experiment was under controlled conditions
can show demand characteristics
beh not genuine
results don’t tell us how kids learn to be aggressive
- lowers the validity
