Psychodynamic Approach^ Flashcards
Defence Mechanisms
how we deal with stuff we are not ready for
denial - refuse to acknowledge
displacement - taking out feelings on someone else
repression - forcing memories/ feelings out so you don’t think about them
Iceberg Analogy
conscious - above water
hypnosis - water level
unconscious - below (repressed)
Structure of Personality
Id - unconscious, pleasure principle, when born
Ego - mediates, reality principle, at 2 years old
Superego - morality principle, at 5
Psychosexual Stages
Oral - 0 to 1, smoking, biting nails
Anal - 1 to 3, anus witholding/ expulsive, perfectionist
Phallic - 3 to 5, narcissistic, genitals
Latency - 5 to puberty, repressed conflicts, difficult to express emotions, form relations
Genital - puberty to adult, sexual desires, difficult to form heterosexual relations
Oedipus
in phallic stage
castration anxiety
- like mother, hate dad
- fear of losing it if dad fins out
Little Hans and horses
Electra
in phallic stage
penis envy
- jealous that mom is with dad, wants him
- gave it up when their want for dad goes to wanting a baby
formed cause accused of sexist accusations when he ignored the women part in his explanation
Little Hans
saw a horse collapse and developed a phobia of horsesFreud- his phobia was a displacement of his phobia of his dad (castration anxiety)Hans wasn’t interviewed, only his dad
: bias, not report all, lied
- Freud could have asked leading questions as he knew of Oedipus complex
Real World Applications
psychotherapy
first attempt to treat mental conditions psychologically instead of physically
dream analysis to try and access the unconscious mind
- bring unconscious to conscious to deal with it
Untestable Concepts
unfalsifiability
not a lot of evidence, not scientific
case studies can’t be generalised
unconscious mind cant be assessed
Determinism
more valid- no personal control = more scientificno control over actions- defence mechanisms- experiences later in life that we dont control
: self fulfiling prophecy
Psychic Determinism
much of beh determined by unconscious conflict
slip of tongue
- no accident, unconscious thoughts
critics
- extreme as it dismisses free will’s influence on beh
