Social learning theory Flashcards
Social learning theory
Vicarious learning
Modelling a behaviour that you have seen being reinforced because you want to receive similar reinforcement
Social learning theory
Identification
Attaching oneself to a model because they have the qualities you wish to possess
Social learning theory
Imitation
Copying a behaviour
Social learning theory
Model
A person who shows examples of behaviour
Social learning theory
Modelling
Imitating a behaviour that has been shown by a model who you have identified with
Social learning theory
Reinforcement
The consequences of behaviour. Behaviour followed by positive reinforcement is strengthened and is likely to continue
Social learning theory
Mediational processes
- Attention - To what extent is the behaviour noticed
- Retention - How well is the behaviour remembered
- Motor reproduction - The person’s physical ability to repeat the task
- Motivation - The will to carry out the observed behaviour (is the behaviour rewarded or punished
What is meant by social learning theory
Social learning theory suggests that people learn through the observation and imitation of role models, via vicarious inforcement with the help of mediational processes
Social Learning Theory
Bobo Dolls evaluation points
To investigate if social behaviours, eg aggression could be acquired by observation and imitation
The purpose of the doll is to be hit
Ignores
Trying to please someone (social desierability bias)
Responding to demand characteristics
10 minutes in the room with not much else to do
Unethical as it is exposing children to violence
Don’t know prior exposure
Observational learning could be due to mirror neurones, under emphasised
Good as it is in a controlled environment so it can be replicated an extraneous variables can be controlled, however it does lack ecological validity
