Q

Social learning theory is similar to the behaviour approach in which ways?

A
  • They are both considered learning approaches

* they they both agree that most behaviour is learned

Q

Why is the social learning theory different from the behavioural approach?

A

Social learning theory is different from the behavioural approach because an assumption of social learning theory is that we can learn just by observing others.

Q

What is meant by Observational learning?

A

Observational learning is when we learn by

observing and copying someone else’s behaviour.

Q

What are the two factors affecting whether or not someone will imitate a model’s behaviour?

A

The two factors affecting whether or not someone will imitate a model’s behaviour are whether they
identify with the model, and whether the learner receives
vicarious reinforcement

Q

Explain why Bandura’s research might lack ecological validity

A

Bandura’s study was conducted in a controlled, artificial environment, with a strange adult acting in a very unusual, aggressive, way towards a blow up toy. Since the situation was unfamiliar and unusual to the children, and they had no prior experience with the blow up toy, they may have felt confused. This may have made them more likely to imitate the aggressive behaviour of the adult than they would have done in a real life setting

Q

Social learning theory in a sentance.

A

In social learning theory, Albert Bandura agrees with the behaviourist learning theories but he adds two important ideas:

  1. Mediating processes occur between stimuli & responses.
  2. Behavior is learned from the environment through the process of observational learning.

13
Q

What are two main differences between social learning theory and the behaviourist approach?

A

Social learning theory says that mediational processes are involved in learning, whereas classical and operant conditioning state that learning is direct.

Social learning theory says that, in addition to classical and operant conditioning, we can learn through observational learning

14
Q

Why is SLT a more holistic model of learning than the behaviourist approach?

A

Social learning theory is more holistic than the behavioural approach because it incorporates meditation processes into the learning process

Q

What is meant by identification?

A

Identification is the extent to which we feel like the person who is modelling behaviour.

16
Q

What are the strengths of social learning theory?

A
  • Incorporates mediational processes, therefore it is more holistic
  • real world applications of identification (similar, hard work, imitate)
17
Q

What are limitations of Banduro’s Bobo Doll study?

A

1) the study may lack ecological validity. artificial, controlled environment meant that kids might look for cues of what to do and repeat that behaviour
2) may have involved ethical issues, kids watching violent, aggressive behaviour
3) lacks internal validity. used matched pairs design, so could have not matched for important characteristics, such as prior ownership of a bobo doll, fear of clowns, toy preference

18
Q

What are limitations of SLT?

A

1) it is based on Banduro’s research (which may: lack ecological validity, involve ethical issues, lack internal validity)
2) we can’t use scientific methods to test meditational processes. so we can’t make predictions about it either. (Why? Mediational processes are not directly observable. There is no scientific method for testing, like the cognitive approach offers using inference.)
