Social justice Flashcards
What is social justice?
Justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities and privileges within society.
Give 2 examples of ways Christians work towards social justice.
- Many support the Fair Trade movement
- Many work to raise awareness about human trafficking, supporting groups like the Salvation Army.
Describe the relationship between peace and a just society.
When a society is just, valuing all and providing fair opportunities, there are fewer reasons for conflict due to mutual respect. People are less likely to feel marginalised or disempowered so the likelihood of terrorism taking root is also reduced.
What happens if the law can be trusted?
Crime is punished appropriately, adding to the community’s sense of safety. People feel able to report concerns rather than taking the law into their own hands.
What is the Christian response to social injustice.
Believe they have a responsibility to stand up for the weak and oppressed and that social injustices should not be left unchallenged.
Why are Christians opposed to any form of social injustice?
They advocate the value and dignity of all human beings and do not accept that any human should possess fewer rights or values than another. Believe that every human has equal value in the eyes of God.
What is the Liberation theology?
A Christian idea that God has the power to change situations in the world that are unjust.
What do some Christians believe this means?
That it is their right to stand up against governments that oppress their people, or where authorities misuse their powers.
How do Christians respond to the liberation theology?
They may take part in peaceful protests or actively take part in supporting those harmed by injustice.
James 1:27
‘Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.’
Proverbs 31:9
‘Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy.’
