What is social justice?
Targets marginalised and disadvantaged groups, aims to reduce level of health inequities in Australia
The four principles of social justice are
-equity
-access
-diversity
-supportive environments
What is equity and access?
The idea of fairness- generation justice and rules and regulations to ensure freedom from bias or discrimination
Ensuring resources and services are allocated in accordance with needs of specific populations. Allows for a more balances level of access for all and equitable allocation- what people are doing so that everyone can have the same health outcomes
What is diversity?
Describes neighbourhoods, student bodies, towns with members who have identifiable differences in backgrounds and lifestyles
Having distinct differences
Failure to respect diversity = discrimination = violation of human rights
What is supportive environment?
The third international conference on health promotion, sundsvall, sweden, june 9-15 1991
-the conference statement highlights 4 aspects of the supportive environment
Strengthening advocacy through community action, particularly through groups organised by women
Enabling communities and individuals to take control over their health and environment through education and empowerment
• Building alliances for health and supportive environments in order to strengthen the cooperation between health and environmental
campaigns and strategies.
